Founder and Program Director of Dementia Day Center The Tulip Place located in Milton GA.
My journey began 27 years ago in Amsterdam, where I helped launch the world’s first dementia day center. After moving to Georgia, I founded The Tulip Place to bring joyful, empowering programs to families. My passion is creating laughter-filled days and supporting care partners every day.

Over twenty five years ago, I began my career in social services and quickly found my passion for working with seniors. Inspired by my grandmother, I began teaching fitness classes and coordinating activities at the local senior center. This led to working at an assisted living community and getting to know and love the memory care residents. My goal is to make each day special and fun for them. It is truly my pleasure to know our wonderful members and call them my friends!

I’ve spent most of my career supporting people with special needs, managing homes where they could live safely and happily. Now, I’m part of a wonderful team running a day program for individuals in the early stages of dementia. I love creating a space where people feel engaged, respected, and—most importantly—have fun every day!

My experience as a caregiver during college started my love for supporting seniors and I joined The Tulip Place team. Being around people living with dementia and their care partners has truly changed my life and I have found my passion. I love bringing smiles to faces and knowing that everyone leaves as happy as can be!

My involvement with dementia began in 2024 through volunteering at The Tulip Place, that my friend Laila started. I now work with the team on a part-time basis.
I love being with our members, chatting, playing games, sitting on the porch and all the others things we do together during a Tulip Place day. It's my happy place! "
Hi, I am Laila and I am a Dementia Certified Practitioner. I have been helping families deal with dementia for over 25 years now. Whether it is helping care partners with questions, organizing activities and day programs for people living with dementia or educating the community, my passion is helping families dealing with dementia cope better and have a better quality of life. Dementia Day Center The Tulip Place is located in Milton but anybody in the neighboring counties can come join our program!
My favorite job was in Amsterdam, 27 years ago, where my professor at the University of Amsterdam, opened the first ever day center and program in the world for people living with dementia. The impact the program has on the family and person living with dementia was clear from the start and proved its positive impact from the start.
After moving to Georgia from the Netherlands with my family, I realized there is no similar program here for people living at home, in independent or assisted living communities to come to and experience a great day. At the same time, having your loved one join this program, it gives care partners a break in caregiving to recharge and also have a great day. Aging in place is what many of us want and this program can help with that.
What makes our day program different is the way people experience a day at The Tulip Place. Our day is filled with fun, laughter and friendship. It combats loneliness, gives purpose and is a social meeting place to do activities with peers, just sit and chat and have lunch together, all based on the interest and personalities of the group. It gives people independence and autonomy over their day. They decide what and how we do activities and what makes it a good day for them, what engages and is fun to do.
If you want or need a day for yourself or think your loved one should have a day with friends and laughter or just want to learn more about how I can help support you, feel free to reach out. Thank you for your interest in volunteering at The Tulip Place, dementia day program. We are thrilled to have you on board and can’t wait for you to meet our wonderful members. Before you arrive at our group, we kindly ask that you watch the linked video for information about how our program is run and why we do what we do!
The Fundamentals of Person-Centered Dementia Care in Respite Environments
Since the video itself is vague to all respite day programs, let me emphasize a few things that you’ll need to know about our program:
First, we are all about socialization and having fun! We laugh a lot and let the members steer the conversation and activities as best they can. It is imperative that you respect our members and maintain their dignity and integrity.
Secondly, we need volunteers to assist our members with our activities, so please expect that you will be a second set of eyes or hands during activities such as games, art, or cooking; not doing the activities yourself. We hope that you will refrain from being on your phone during periods when the members do not need help. Feel free to join in the conversation!
Third, our members do have varying levels of dementia which affects their short term memory. This means that they may not recall an activity that we just finished or what we did during the day. Please refrain from using the term “remember”. If you tell them they just finished an activity and they don’t remember it, do not push them to remember. This can cause them to become agitated. Similarly, some of our members do not know they have dementia. Although the term may come up, telling them they have it, is not advised.
Also, you will meet their caregivers at drop off and pick up. Please refer all caregiver concerns or questions to a staff member. That helps us keep up with communication and follow up and helps us to personally address the family’s needs.
Feel free to ask any questions! We appreciate your time and interest in The Tulip Place!
Thanks,
